Bleach' Review: This Is
Definitely One Of The Best Live-Action Manga Adaptations (Fantasia 2021)

Live-action adaptations of
manga/anime titles for the big screen are nothing new, and unlike adaptations
of other sources — novels, stories, comics, and TV episodes — there is no
consistent thread running through them. Some are wonderful, while others are dreadful,
and the majority are somewhere in the middle. Director Shinsuke Sato, on the
other hand, is gradually establishing himself as something of a constant. He's
turned six manga stories and four novels into films so far, including two this
year! His success rate swings as one might expect, and while I Am a Hero (my
review) was a hit in 2015, his most recent film is regrettably forgettable.
Ichigo (Sota Fukushi) is a freshman in high
school with a gift that he once despised but has since accepted: he can see
ghosts. It expressed concern for him as a child and resulted in disaster, but
now he defends their memory against punk rockers and bullies on occasion. When
Rukia Kuchiki (Hana Sugisaki), dressed in American ninja gear and startled that
he can see her, enters his life, things take an even more bizarre turn. When a
Hollow — an evil spirit — attacks her, she is wounded and transfers her powers
to Ichigo as a last-ditch effort.
Any film should try as much as possible to
captivate audiences as quickly as Bleach is doing with the introduction of our
two main characters. With his capacity to see the dead and power flow life as a
young avenger of sorts for the person who died, one is touted as a bit of a
mystery, while the other emerges as a delightfully hilarious rock star wielding
immense power from something like a tiny frame.
Rukia loses up her mana regeneration in the
film, and Ichigo becomes the resident powerhouse who no longer feels the need
to talk with the deceased while she continues to hang out on the outskirts. The
female warrior is now "simply" a girl, and speaking specifically to
ghosts is no longer a plot aspect. To put it in simple terms, it's
disappointing, and it undermines the film's version of history, characters, and
thinks the odds with audiences hoping for a different kind of action movie.
This poor story choice is bad enough, but it may have been
alleviated in other ways, such as with good action or intriguing character
development, which neither are there. The action set-pieces are underwhelming
in terms of frequency and execution, and the CG effects, although adequate, add
little to aid the fight geography. It leaves spectators with uninspired
choreography because action occurs too tightly, only pulling back to reveal the
greater effect when a body shoots across the screen to bash into something. It
does have an anime-style combat feel to it, but although that may be a benefit
in certain people's views, it doesn't transition well to live-action.
